Create interactive stories

A simple, free tool for writing multiple-choice games and interactive fiction. No programming required.

This is a complete Squiffy story. Play it on the right, or change the text on the left and watch it update.

Links in [[double brackets]] move the story on to a new section. Links in [single brackets] show a passage, a little more text within the same section. That’s all you need to get started.

Write in plain text

Write your story as ordinary text, and add links where the player makes a choice. There’s no programming needed.

Format your text with Markdown, for bold, italics, lists and more, or use HTML when you need complete control. See Basic concepts.

Bring your story to life

Make text appear with a typewriter effect, fade in, or slide in from below, or let the reader click to continue at their own pace. See Animation.

Ask for the player’s name, or any other input, with built-in validation.

Write anywhere

The editor runs in your web browser, with nothing to install and no account to create. Install it to your device and it works offline, too.

A downloadable desktop app is coming soon, in Squiffy 7.

Prefer your own text editor? Use the command-line tool instead.

Plays on any device

Your finished story runs in the player’s web browser, on phones, tablets and computers alike. There’s nothing for them to download or install.

Players’ progress is saved automatically, so they can close the page and come back later to carry on where they left off.

Extend with JavaScript

When you need more, add JavaScript to any section or passage, create your own helpers and animations, or embed your story in your own web page or app.

It's free - and so are you
